Reduced Pressure Zone Valve (RPZ)

Reduced Pressure Zone Valve - Installation, Servicing & Repairs

What is a RPZ Valve?

A reduced pressure zone (RPZ) valve is a mechanical device that prevents contaminated water from flowing back into a drinking water supply. RPZ valves are installed on cold-water supply pipes that may carry fluids that pose a significant health risk, such as those containing pesticides, chemicals, or carcinogenic substances.

How Often Do I Need My RPZ Valves Servicing?

Generally, backflow prevention devices should be tested at least once a year by a competent & qualified person. The Legionella Risk Assessment should detail the servicing frequency of RPZ valve servicing. UK regulations also require that records of the testing need to be kept for a minimum of five years.

As the frequency of device testing can vary, it's best to consult with qualified professionals like JN Environmental who can personally inspect your systems backflow measures.

What Are The Signs That I Need My RPZ Valve Servicing?

Identifying when your RPZ valve needs servicing is important for preventing any potential issues. A leak is the most common sign that an RPZ valve needs repair. Other causes of plumbing leakage include rust, thermal expansion, and changes in water pressure.

If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to arrange a service to address the problem and maintain safe water.

Do I Need Backflow Protection?

Yes, in the United Kingdom, backflow prevention is a legal requirement. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Scottish Water Byelaws set out the legal requirements for backflow prevention and the prevention of contamination of the public water supply.

These regulations also state that backflow prevention devices and valves should be installed where there is a risk of contamination. For example, in facilities which use chemicals, irrigation systems, and fire suppression systems.

RPZ valves are subject to the following requirements:

  • Notification: You must notify your water company and obtain consent before installing an RPZ valve.
  • Commissioning: A qualified tester must commission the RPZ valve.
  • Servicing: The RPZ valve must be tested at least once a year.
